Norm Lewis and Tamyra Gray will take over the roles of two of the gods on “Once on This Island” this winter as Merle Dandridge and Quentin Earl Darrington are on contractual leave.

Lewis will play the role of Agwe and Gray will play Papa Ge beginning Jan. 8. Dandridge, who will be shooting the television series “Greenleaf,” and Darrington are expected to later return to the roles.

The duration of Lewis and Gray’s contracts was not specified. Lewis comes to the role after most recently performing as “Sweeney Todd” in the Off-Broadway production of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”

Gray was last seen on Broadway as “Mimi” in Rent.

“Once on This Island,” produced by Ken Davenport and Hunter Arnold, opened on Dec. 3 at the Circle in the Square Theatre.
