Shonda Rhimes, Jada Pinkett Smith and Gabrielle Union-Wade have joined “American Son” as co-producers.

They join Simpson Street, the producing company of star Kerry Washington, as well as Jeffrey Richards, Rebecca Gold, Will Trice and more in producing the Broadway premiere of the play. Additional co-producers include basketball player Dwyane Wade, Steve Stoute, chief executive of Translation, a marketing agency, and Nnamdi Asomugha, an actor and husband to Washington.

Though this is the first Broadway producing credit for Rhimes, she has supported theater in Los Angles, including giving an endowment to the IAMA Theatre Company in 2017. Rhimes is the showrunner of television show “Scandal,” which stars Washington.

Written by Christopher Demos-Brown, “American Son” stars Washington, Steven Pasquale, Eugene Lee and Jeremy Jordan. The play, directed by Kenny Leon, begins performance at the Booth Theatre on Oct. 6, 2018, with an opening night on Nov. 4.
